This page covers what you may do with the data the Occult API returns. The short version: build and sell whatever you like with it, do not resell the API itself as an API.

1. What you may do

Subject to your account being in good standing, OCCULTLAB CODE PRIVATE LIMITED grants you a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, adapt and display the data returned by the API in your own products and services, including commercially.

That expressly includes:

  • Selling an app, site or report built on API responses.
  • Storing responses in your own database and serving them to your users — there is no cache expiry we impose.
  • Modifying, translating, styling or combining responses with your own content and other data sources.
  • Generating documents — charts, PDFs, reports — and distributing or selling them to your users.
  • Use inside a client project you are paid to build.

2. Attribution

Not required. You do not have to credit us, show our name, or link to us anywhere in your product. We would like it, and it helps other developers find us, but it is not a condition of use.

3. What you may not do

  • Resell API access as API access. You may not expose our endpoints as your own API, act as a reseller of calls, or build a service whose substantial purpose is to give third parties programmatic access to our responses. Building a product that happens to use the API is fine; building a proxy for it is not.
  • Bulk-extract the corpus. You may not systematically harvest responses in order to reconstruct our datasets — the festival and calendar tables in particular — as a standalone dataset for distribution or sale.
  • Share your key. Keys are per-account. Do not embed a secret key in a mobile app, a front-end bundle, or a public repository; call the API from your own server.
  • Misrepresent the source. Do not claim our calculations are certified, endorsed or guaranteed by us, or present our output as advice from a qualified professional.

4. What the data is, and is not

The API returns computed positions, timings and classical classifications. It is calculation, not counsel. Nothing it returns is medical, legal, financial or psychological advice, and you should not present it to your users as though it were. If your product makes consequential suggestions on the back of it, that is your editorial decision and your responsibility.

Astrological traditions genuinely disagree — that is why we expose 48 ayanamsas rather than one. Choosing between them is yours to make and to explain to your users.

5. Our own rights

The API, the software behind it, the documentation and our datasets remain ours. This licence covers the data returned to you, not the system that produces it. Our name and logo are not licensed here; do not use them to imply partnership or endorsement without asking.

6. If the licence ends

If your account is closed or terminated, you stop making calls. Data you already received and built into your product before that point is yours to keep using under this licence — we do not ask anyone to tear down a shipped product.

7. Questions

If your use case sits near one of the limits above — a white-label platform, an agency reselling to many clients, a research dataset — write to mridul.kabra23@gmail.com. We would rather answer than have you guess. See also our Terms of Service.
